R K NARAYAN

here are many Indian English writers among them Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami popularly known as R. K. Narayan is a prominent one. He was born on 10th October, 1906 at Madras now Chennai. He was one of eight children; six sons and two daughters. Narayan was second among the sons. His father was a school headmaster. His family later shifted to Mysore where he had his education. He did his graduation from Maharaja College, in Mysore way back.in 1930. Then Narayan joined in government service. He became a clerk in Mysore Secretariate. Later he left this job and became a teacher in a school in the historical city of Mysore. All these experiences must have enriched R. K. Narayan to emerge as one of the finest Indian writers. Then left teaching and whole-heartedly devoted himself to writing stories and novels in English. He wrote a number of novels and short stories. of which mention must be made of 'Swami and His friends', 'Dadu', 'Malgudi Days' and many other stories. In his writing, Narayan beautifully portrayed the lives of common men and his style of writing was lucid and ironic which captured the hearts of millions of readers across the country and abroad. Honours were heaped on him for his wonderful literary creations. Narayan won numerous awards during the course of his literary career. His first major award was in 1958, the Sahitya Akademi Award for the guide. When the book was made into a film, he received the film fare award for the best story. In 1964, he received the Padma Bhusan during the Republic Day honours.  In 1980, he was awarded the AC Beson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature, of which he was an honorary member. In 1982 he was elected an honorary member of the America Academy of Arts and Letters. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature multiple times, but never own honour and honorary D. Lit. from the University of Leeds. These great writer passed away on May 13, 2001 leaving behind his creations that can never die.
