SUNIL GANGOPADHYAY


Sunil Gangopadhyay popularly known as Nil-Lohit was the eminent Bengali. He was born on 7th September, 1934 in Faridpur, now in Bangladesh. His father's name was Kalipada Gangopadhyay and Mira Devi was his mother. He had received his early education at Town School, Kolkata. He took B.A. degree from City College. He had worked with Shirsendu Mukhopadhyay at Desh for nearly three decades. He was a versatile writer. His first literary work is 'Eka abong kayek jon'. He enriched Bengali literature by writing poems, novels and short-stories. His important works are Arjun, Jiben Je Rakam, Santu-Kakababu, Sai Samay etc. In 1972 he got 'Ananda Puraskar' in general category.In 1979, 'National poet' honour was given by the Akashbani Kolkata. In 1983 he got 'Bankim Puraskar' for the book Sei Somoy and 'Sahitya Academe Award' in 1984. He received 'Andra Puraskar' for the book Poorba-Paschim and 'Sahitya Setu puroskar' in 1989. In 1999 he got 'Annada-Snowcem Puroskar' for the story Nil Lohiter Golpo. In 2003 he got 'Annadashankar puroskar'. He acquired 'Saraswati Samman' for Prothom Alo in 2004. The Hindu Literary Prize shortlisted The Fakir in 2011. He got 'Sera Bengali Lifetime Achievement Award' by Star Ananda in 2012.  His contribution to Bengali literature was well recognized with his death, Bengal lost a renowned literary personality. The great modern Bengali poet died in 2012, drawing the conclusion of a memorable epoch.
