Gregory Stephen Chappell popularly known as Greg Chappell was one of the greatest cricketers the great game of cricket has ever produced. He was born on August
7,
1948 at Unley, Adelaide in Australia. His grand father was also a great Australian cricketer. The former Australian Lan Chappell and another Australian cricketer Trevor Chappell were his illustrious brothers. Greg Chappell represented Queensland, South Australia and Somerset besides playing in the Australian cricket team. He was an outstanding right hand middle order batsman and right arm medium pace and leg-break bowler. He is regarded the best batsman in the post Bradman period in Australian cricket. He played in
87 matches scoring
7,110 runs at an average of
53.86 with
247 not out being his highest score. Greg hit as many as
24 Test hundreds and
31 half-centuries. He was also a fine close-in fielder making
122 catches. He was a useful bowler, too. He bagged
47 Test wickets with the career the best figure of
5 wickets for
61 run. Greg Chappell was also a fine one day player. He played
74 One Day Internationals for Australia scoring
2331 runs at an average of
40.18 with one hundred and
14 fifties. His highest score in limited over cricket was an unbeaten
138. Greg Chappell led his country with great success. He captained Australia in
48 Test matches winning in
21 matches. Greg had the rate distinction of scoring a hundred in his first and last Test innings and remains the only cricketer to score Test centuries in both innings on captaincy debut. But such a great player could not prove himself a good cricket coach. His term as coach of the Indian team can be termed as a failure.
