RAGGING

Ragging is definitely the worst practice prevalent among students particularly studying in engineering and medical colleges of our country. The literal meaning of ragging is ‘playing practical jokes on somebody or teasing someone. But this joke or teasing turn out to be night mare to the newcomers of fresher’s to colleges or college hostels. Ragging is committed on new students on the opening day or the following days on the plea and pretext that it will make one fit for the struggle for existence. Ragging has been most rampant these days causing a lot of alarm and concern to new students, their guardians and teachers. There are various forms of ragging. The freshmen are asked to dress in a specific dress code prescribed is generally unusual, fresher’s are asked to do various tasks, such as sit-ups or push-ups, sitting in the murga(cock) pose, seniors may attempt to harass or threaten the junior to complete their assignment, include bathing on a wintry night in cold water, sipping simmering coffee or tea, kissing a very high voltage bulb, walking along the narrow cornice of a roof and the like. Sometimes ragged pupils succumb to the merciless tortures. Imposition of stricter laws, public awareness and most importantly true education to students can only check and stop the cruel practice of ragging in our society.
