One of the major
plaguing India today is the alarming problem of unemployment. Unemployment is a
global phenomenon these days. But nowhere is the problem so grave as it is in
our country. Though no accurate figure of the total number of unemployed people
can be given, there is no denying the fact that the number is staggeringly
high. There are number of causes behind unemployment. The most important cause
of it is the alarming growth of population. The employment avenues and
opportunities are pitifully narrower and smaller in comparison with the growing
population. Unemployment and poverty goes side by side. The problem of
unemployment gives rise to the problem of poverty. Young people after long time
unemployment find the wrong way to earn money. To get rid from the unemployment
stress, they accept alcohol or drugs. The labour force participation rate has
come down to 46.5 percent for those who are 15 years and above. A large
proportion of the employed workers get low wage and are stuck in ‘employed
poverty’ trap. Our defective education system is not job-oriented. The
education policy makers have never taken into consideration the socio-economic
needs of our people. The introduction of the computer and labour-saving
machines has reduced the scope of employment. Unrest and agitation among
workers have resulted in lay-offs and layouts in mills and factories. Creation of
more job opportunities, reviving cottage and small scale industries, introducing
technical education in more and more education institutions and above all toning
up agriculture can only cope up with the serious problem of unemployment.
