BALAICHAND MUKHOPADHYAY


Balaichand Mukhopadhyay was one of the finest writers of Bengali.Literature. He was a recipient of the civilian honour of the Padma Bhusan. He was born at Manihari in Bihar on 19th July in 1899. The famous physician of Purnia district Dr. Satyacharan Mukhopadhyay was his father. His mother was Mrinalini Devi. He was mainly known in Bengali literature as "Banaphul". He had his schooling in Sahebguanj Railway High School in Bihar. He passed the Entrance Exam in the first division. Then he was admitted St. Columbus College. He was admitted in Medical College and passed it with credit. Balaichand's interest in literature grew when he was at the school hostel. Then he published a magazine named ' Bikash'. His poem was first published in the 'Malancha' in 1915. Though Balaichand was a physician in profession, he had free access of all the branches of Bengali literature. He was an artist in describing characters and scenes and was always keen to experiment. Of his famous poetic creations, mention must be made of 'Karakamaleshu', 'Banaphuler Kabita', 'Surasaptak',etc. In planning short stories he showed originality, sharp intellect and many experiments to present human character to the amazement of his readers. This trend also makes his stories rich and deep in life's experience and impersonal thoughts. Another special unique feature of his stories is short length. As most of his short stories is short stories have this feature they are called miniature stories. He was also a great writer of Bengali prose. Of the immortal Banaphul stories--- 'Chok Gelo', 'Dhani Daridra', 'Dangar Samay', 'Dui Teere', etc. deserve mention. Banaphul wrote great novels like ---'Hate Bazare', Sthabar', 'Mrigaya' and 'Agniswar' etc. He was a good playwright and was a great admirer of Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. Balaichand breathed his last on 9th February in 1979. But his literary creations can never die.
