Sarva Shiksha Abhijan is a programme for universal Elementary Education. This programme is also an attempt to provide an opportunity for improving human capabilities to all children through provision of community owned quality education in a mission mode. It is response to the demand for quality basic education all over the country. The Sarva Shiksah Abhijan was started in September, 2001 to ensure education for all. This is a Central Government Scheme which is to be implemented in collaboration with the State Governments. The programme aims at providing eight years of equality education to all the Indian Children in the age of 6-14 years. The programme had already covered all the districts of the country by 2001. To achieve the target within the given or fixed time 6078 Primary and 4620 Upper Primary schools are to be set up to provide basic or elementary education to the children of the country. The Central Government disburses money which reaches the schools via the State Government and the local panchayet. Training is given to a large number of teachers across the country and district level committees have been formed to supervise the progress of education. It provides a wide convergent frame work for implementation of Elementary Education schemes. It also a programme with budget provision for strengthening vital areas to achieve universalisation of elementary education. The real progress of the country largely depends on the success of the Sarva Shiksha Abhijan.
