SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN

Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the most famous Mathematicians of the world, was born at Erode in Tamil Nadu in 1887. His father was a mere clerk in merchant's shop and his mother's job was to prepare astrological charts and make predictions. Srinivasa inherited his aptitude for mathematical calculations from his mother. He had great interest in mathematics ever since his early life and was tremendously influenced by G.S. Car's famous book entitled ' A Synopsis of Elementary Results'. He began his service career with the job of a clerk in the Madras Port Trust. Srinivasa secured this job with the help of his generous friends. There his talent and potentialities were first noticed by Sir Francis Spring, the Chief of the Trust. He was then introduced to G. H. Hardy, a fellow of the Trinity College. In England, Ramanujan became very famous for his joint work in mathematics. The Ramanujan Journal, a scientific journal, was established to publish work in all areas of mathematics influenced by Ramanujan. He was then elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918 and later of the Trinity College. Ramanujan was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree by research in March 1916 for his work on highly composite numbers, the first part of which was published as a paper in the proceeding of the London Mathematical Society.
