THE SYSTEM OF DOWRY

D
owry refers to property or money brought by a bride to her husband through marriage. The system of dowry is a great curse and social evil prevalent in Indian society. The murdering of brides by their husbands and in-laws has become quite common in many parts of the country. The unscrupulous persons allege that the brides' parents failed to give the dowry that had been promised by them at the time of negotiation of marriage. Now-a-days in the marriage market bridegrooms are auctioned ! The rich parents want to marry their daughters to established persons and giving enough money and jewellery to their daughters as dowry. But the poor parents can ill-afford to do this.
A poor father with their daughters feels cursed and heavily burdened and thus many families are ruined. Sometimes it so happens that a highly qualified person being attracted by an offer of huge amount of money in the marriage, marries a girl who is no match for him on intellectual attainments. But such a marriage sometimes does not last and lead to divorce or physical and mental torture to the bride. The existence of dowry system in our society can be attributed to ignorance, greed and poverty. To eradicate this blot or stigma from the face of Indian Society a number of measures need to be taken immediately. Economic conditions of people in general has to be first improved and education for all the especially girls should be ensured. Much of the problem of dowry system will be solved if the girls and women folk in our Indian society can stand on their own feet financially. Secondly, the government must enact and enforce more stringent laws prohibiting the evil practice of dowry in any of its form. Last but not least, the public and the media should form public opinion against the practice of dowry system in the country. Public awareness coupled with the efforts initiated by the government can only truly and perfectly combat the social evil of dowry in Indian society.
