azi Nazrul Islam who is called the 'rebel poet' was one of the greatest Bengali poets. He was born on 24th May, 1899 at Churulia in the district of Burdwan. Kazi Fakir Ahmed and Jaheda Khatun were his parents. Najrul came of a very poor family. As a result, he could not continue his studies after Class-X. But his genius was evident in singing songs and composing them since his boyhood. He became a member of the troupe. In his early youth, Najrul joined the army as a soldier and made his mark. After a few years, he left the army and came to Calcutta and devote himself to composition of poems. His 'Bidrohi', the rebel made him famous overnight. Then Najrul gradually published 'Agnibina', 'Bisher Banshi', 'Dolan Champa' and so on. In his poems, Najrul talked about the poor and the oppressed. He also composed more than two thousand songs of various kinds. He was awarded Padma Bhusan in 1960. He got Ekushey Padak in 1976 and he got Independence Day Award in 1977. Najrul might remain immortal in the hearts of his admirers for his songs only. He unfortunately lost his power of speech in 1942 and lived up to 1976 in the same pathetic condition. Najrul died at Dhaka in 1976.
