Kazi Nazrul Islam who is called the 'rebel poet' was one of the greatest Bengali poets. He was born on
24th May,
1899 at Churulia in the district of Burdwan. Kazi Fakir Ahmed and Jaheda Khatun were his parents. Najrul came of a very poor family. As a result, he could not continue his studies after Class-
X. But his genius was evident in singing songs and composing them since his boyhood. He became a member of the troupe. In his early youth, Najrul joined the army as a soldier and made his mark. After a few years, he left the army and came to Calcutta and devote himself to composition of poems. His '
Bidrohi', the rebel made him famous overnight. Then Najrul gradually published '
Agnibina', '
Bisher Banshi', '
Dolan Champa' and so on. In his poems, Najrul talked about the poor and the oppressed. He also composed more than two thousand songs of various kinds. He was awarded
Padma Bhusan in
1960. He got
Ekushey Padak in
1976 and he got
Independence Day Award in
1977. Najrul might remain immortal in the hearts of his admirers for his songs only. He unfortunately lost his power of speech in
1942 and lived up to
1976 in the same pathetic condition. Najrul died at Dhaka in
1976.
