Bula Chowdhury

 

Bula Chowdhury is a great Indian swimmer. She was born on 2nd January in 1970 at Radhagobinda Colony of Hindmotor. Bula was the second child of  Ajit Chowdhury and Bakul Chowdhury. She named Bula by her elder brother. Bula received the first training in swimming from her father in their own pond. She started swimming when she was only one and half years of age. Pashupati Kundu was Bula's first trained coach in swimming. The German trainer Bernard Janok, the Australian coach Erick Armond, the Indian Coach K.B Sharma also trained her. In 1933, Bula tied her wedding lock with Sanjib Chakraborty who also earned great reputation as a swimmer. She got the gold medal in swimming in the Hong Kong Asian Championship in 1983. In 1984, Bula bagged four gold medals from SAF Games held at Kathmandu. In the Colombo SAF Games she got six gold medals. In 1994 she was given the Arjun Award. In 1989 and 1999 Bula attempted to cross the English Channel but failed for unfavorable weather on the both occasions. But Bula made a world record among female swimmers in crossing the Strait of Gibralter. She created a record for 30 km track in 3 hours 26 minutes. Bula's aims at joining the World Cup Marathon swimming contest and also to cross the Strait of Cook.She was elected as MLA from 2006 to 2011 in West Bengal state of India. May Bula's dream comes true and she earn more name and fame for the country. She is now planning to establish a swimming academy in Kolkata.
