KHUDIRUM BOSE

Khudiram Bose, a great patriot and martyr of India, was born on 3rd December, 1889 in the small village named Mohobani, situated under the Keshpur Police Station in the Midnapore district of Bengal. His father was a Tehsilder in the Nerajol. Khudiram was the fourth child in a family of three daughters. His parents, Trailokyanath Bose and Lakshmipriya Devi had two sons before the birth of Khudiram but both of them died prematurely. Following the traditional customs prevalent in the culture, the newborn child was symbolically sold to his elder sister in exchange of three handfuls of food grains locally known as 'Khud', in attempt to save him from dying at an early age. This way he acquired the name "Khudiram". He lost both his parents when he was a boy of only six or seven. Aparupa Roy, his elder sister, brought him to her house at Hatgacha village under Daspur Police station. Aparupa's husband, Amritlal Roy, got him admitted to Tamluk's Hamilton High school. Khudiram had his school education both at the Tamluk Hamilton  School and at the Midnapore collegiate school. He was bold, brave but benevolent from his very boyhood. In 1902 and 1903, sri Aurobinda and Sister Nibedita visited Midnapore. They held a series of public lectures and private session with the exciting revolutionary groups of freedom. When he was at school, he was associated with a revolutionary party. Apparently he joined Anushilan Samiti, and came into contact with the network of Barindra Kumar Ghosh. He bacame a volunteer at the age of 15. Then one day Khudiram left for Mujaffarpur with Prafulla Chaki on a mission to kill Kingsford, a tyrant magistrate. But the bomb used by them missed the target and unfortunately killed Mrs. and Miss Kennedy. Kingsford, fortunately for him remained unhurt. Khudiram was arrested and sentenced to death. He was hang on August 11, 1908. He faced death with "Vande Mataram" on his lips.
