PROF. PRASANTA CHANDRA MAHALANOBIS


Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the father of modern Indian Statistics, was born on June 29, 1893 in Kolkata. After his very successful school education, he was admitted to the Presidency College from where he took his B.Sc (Honors in Physics) degree in 1912. Then Prasanta Chandra went to study at Cambridge University and came back home with Tripos in Physics and Mathematics. He was soon appointed professor and later Principal of the Presidency College in 1945. Prof. Mahalanobis was the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. in 1931. He invented a new branch of Statistics named 'Mahalanobis Distance'. He also worked on world weather and river projects. In 1944, he was awarded Weldon by the Oxford University and elected fellow of Royal Society. Prof. Mahalanobis was elected President of Indian Science Congress in 1950. He was honoured with Padmabhusan by the Government of India in 1968. This great statistician breathed his last on June 28 in 1972.
