ANANDA SHANKAR

nada Shankar was a great musician and music composer. Ha gave a new dimension to instrumental music fusing the East with the West. Ananda was the son of Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar. He was the nephew of pandit Ravi Shankar. His sister, Mamata Shankar is a great dancer and acteact. He was born on 11th December, 1942 at Almora. Ananda studied in Scindhia School, Gwalior. He trained on the sitar under guru Lalmoni Mishra at BenarasBe He was exposed to western musical trends in the USA and spent some months with Pandit Ravi Shankar in California. His creations, Sagar and Sunflower are emotive and highlight his sensitivity to nature. His other outstanding creations are Yuga Chhanda, India and Shraddhanjali. Ananda's stage performances through Indian in origin and spirit, were modern in technique and presentation. He not only scored the music but also wrote the script and worked on lighting. He was the producer and director of the troupe. His wife, Tanushree Shankar is the troupe's choreographer. The couple who have performed extensively at home and abroad, have schools in Calcutta and Delhi. Ananda won the national award for best music director for Mrinal Sen's film Chorus. Ananda scored music for mega events including the national Games, Wills World Cup Cricket and the SAF Games. This great son of India died on 26th March, 1999 making a vacuum difficult to fill in.
